Congratulations to the LMMA Network for receiving the 2016 Distinguished Service Awards at the Society of Conservation Biology- Oceania.
This honour goes to all community leaders, communities and partners whose collective efforts over the last 20 years has made tremendous contribution to global conservation targets, resource management and humanity.
Professor Richard Kingsford, President of the Society for Conservation Biology (Oceania) said that this award is in recognition of the highly successful role the network has played in effective conservation of marine ecosystems by building from a local base, working closely with fisherman and coastal communities and training community members in adaptive management practices and monitoring.
LMMA Network
In particular, the Society for Conservation Biology was impressed with the organisation’s track record in building membership, particularly in Fiji where the LMMA network is recognised by government as a mechanism for achieving conservation targets.
Finally, we were also particularly impressed with the growth of LMMA into other nearby Oceania regions including Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Palau, and the Solomon Islands as well as the growing interest in the model from other parts of the world.

Receiving the award on LMMAs behalf are Alifereti Tawake, LMMA Council Chair and Roko Sau- Josefa Cinavilakeba, Fiji LMMA Trustees from the SCB President.
