Waitabu – Update #4 – TC Winston

The major delivery of building supplies to rebuild the 7 destroyed houses has now been organised, paid for and delivered tot eh ferry boats on Suva for delivery to Taveuni on Saturday.

Here is Helen in the hardware stores and at the ferry delivery depot with supplies and roofing iron.

Shipment 2 (will be delivered 21 March)

  • Roofing Iron:
    • 9 pieces 14 feet long
    • 43 pieces 12 feet long
    • 22 pieces 10 feet long
    • 6 pieces 7 feet long
  • 21 Kg (over 2,000) roofing nails
  • 20 packs (2,000) rubber washers for roofing nails
  • 5 rolls (about 130m) metal strapping for wooden joints
  • 10 Kg Clout tacks for fixing strapping
  • 5 Hacksaw blades for cutting strapping.

About Us

In 1998 the Waitabu Village of Taveuni declared its fishing grounds or "qoliqoli" to be "tabu" -- a no-take fishing zone. NZAID initially supported the designation with funds for biological surveys and administration. The Wainileli and the Bouma qoliqoli, were continually and heavily overfished, resulting in small fish stocks and damaged coral.
